Library Assistant Job Description
Job Title: Library Assistant
Reports to: Library Directors
Position: 15 hours/week
Start Date: October, 2026
Job Summary: We are seeking an enthusiastic and benevolent library assistant to provide support for the daily operations of the library. This includes checking materials in and out at the circulation desk, helping visitors with reference questions, helping keep the library clean and organized, and providing assistance with programs.
Responsibilities
Library Day-to-Day Operations
● Assist the public at the circulation desk by checking in and out materials and answering the
phone.
- Help the public to find new books and items to check out, learn about library and community resources, use computers, answer the phone, print and fax documents, and register for new library cards.
- Reshelve materials and find materials on hold.
Library Organization
- Help keep the library organized by shelf reading to find misplaced items.
- Work with other staff to clean at the end of the day and as needed.
Program Assistance
- Provide help to staff and visiting program facilitators by setting up supplies and materials, checking in participants, and assistance as needed.
Other duties as assigned
- Special projects might include weeding items from the collection and simple book repair.
- Assist with community outreach events and collaborations.
Qualifications:
● Excellent basic computer knowledge.
- Experience working with the public and diverse populations kindly and respectfully.
- Attention to detail
Preferred qualifications:
● Experience working or volunteering in a library
● High school diploma or above
Physical Requirements: Tasks may involve frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, and some lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (up to 40 pounds); and/or the operation of office equipment or keyboard, in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.
Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed.
Hourly pay $18-$20 per hour depending on skills and experience with paid holidays and vacation/sick leave.
This is a part-time, temporary position October, 2026-February, 2027. It is grant funded with the possibility of renewal.
